15 Jul 2010 | SAVE UP TO 66% ON HOPPER DRYER ENERGY USE
If you are drying polymer, drying can represent between 5 and 25% of your total site energy use.
EECA provided Plastics New Zealand with funding to research and develop a way to make old hopper dryers more energy efficient. The R&D was conducted by Energy NZ with assistance and peer review from members of the industry. The resulting Hoppermiser is a simple combination of insulation and improved dryer controls.
The Hoppermiser has produced the following results when tested in plastics plants:
- reduces dryer energy use by 66%
- reduces heat loss by 72%
- makes drying times quicker
- increases the life expectancy of heating contactors and elements.
The low upfront cost of the Hoppermiser means that it pays for itself in less than 2 years. Costs and potential energy cost savings are in the table below. Calculations are based on 4,000hrs annual operation and gross energy cost of 11c/kWh.
