1 May 2010 | MASS BALANCE SURVEY - 2009 PRODUCTION DATA
The Annual Mass Balance Survey is underway! Forms have been mailed out to all participating Manufacturers.
This data is collected by resin type and is for the benefit of the Industry. The purpose of the questionnaire is to obtain accurate information on the use of plastics in New Zealand, the markets, and their final disposal. These statistics form an important factual basis for our liaison with government and lobbying on legislation that affects New Zealand Plastics Manufacturers.
This information was also previously used as part of our data reporting requirements under the New Zealand Packaging Accord 2004 – 2009. Our focus was to achieve a plastics recycling target of 23% by 2009, which we exceeded (24% achieved by 2009) through increased efficiency due to light weighting and down-gauging in packaging design and an increase in recycling recovery rates. We will continue to collect this data as part of the Packaging Council of New Zealand’s Packaging Product Stewardship Scheme which is being developed to replace the Packaging Accord.
A higher survey return rate means less extrapolation, more accurate figures and a stronger basis for us to support the New Zealand Plastics Industry.
