Christchurch Earthquake Information 2011

Canterbury Public Holiday Information- 18th March 2011

Here is an update on the public holiday for Canterbury that was confirmed as passing all it’s stages through parliament on the 10th March 2011. All of the usual laws regarding public holidays will apply, therefore:

  • Any employee who works on the 18th March will be entitled to his/her relevant daily pay plus half that amount again for time actually worked and an alternative holiday.
  • Any employee who does not work on the 18th March will receive will receive his/her relevant daily pay for the day, provided that it is otherwise a working day for the employee.
  • Where an employee is required to work on a day that would not otherwise be a working day he/she will receive his/her relevant daily pay plus half that amount again for time actually worked.
  • Any employees that are receiving annual holiday pay during this period will be entitled to his/her relevant daily pay for the day
  • There is no obligation to pay any employee who is not receiving pay i.e. any employees who are on unpaid leave.
  • The holiday is for Canterbury only and the region that it will cover will be the same as covered by the Christchurch anniversary holiday.
